  • Major Laishram Jyotin Singh, an Army doctor who died fighting a suicide bomber in Kabul, was conferred the country's highest peacetime gallantry medal, "Ashok Chakra",posthumously at the 62nd Republic Day parade in New Delhi
  • Raveendranath received the "President Award" from Finance Minister Pranb Mukarji in Delhi .He is working as an Inspector in Enforcement Directorate.
  • Deepak Lalwani, a London-based NRI investment consultant specialising on India, has been presented with an "Order of British Empire" (OBE) honour. Prince Charles conferred the honour on Lalwani at Buckingham Palace, in recognition of his contributions to the financial services'' industry.
  • Music composer A.R. Rahman bagged the best original song trophy at the 16th Critics' Choice Awards for his number “If I Rise” in Danny Boyle's film 127 Hours. Written by Rollo Armstrong and American artiste Dido, the song was performed by Rahman and Dido.
  • Suprasannacharya Selected for the "Hussain sha kavi Puraskar" Award. This award has been given from 2001 year. 
  • Nine girls and 14 boys have been selected for the National Bravery Awards-2010. The children received the awards from Prime Minister of India. The youngest award winner this year is six-year-old Shrawan Kumar from Rajasthan. He rescued a one-year-old girl and her two-and-half-year-old sister from a burning hut in Sarneshwar village. 
  • Natalie Portman, who won the best actress Golden Glob for "Black Swan", 'Colin Firth' chosen best actor for his role in "The King”, at an awards party in Beverly Hills, California 
  • Dr.C.V.Subbanna Satavadhani selected for the LokNayak Foundation Award. Former CM Rosaiah was presented the award at Kalabharathi Auditorium, Visaka.
  • Former Indian leg spinner M V Narasimha Rao was awarded the prestigious Member of the Order of British Empire (MBE) for his contribution to cricket and humanity in Ireland. He led the Hyderabad Ranji team to title triumph in 1987 Ranji Trophy.
  • Geospatial World Forum 2011 inaugurated in Hyderabad. Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi conferres Rachapudi Kamakshi Memorial Gold Medal for young Geospatial Scientist 2010 on Thiyam Tamphasana Devi, IIT Guwahati 
  • Union Minister of Science and Technology Kapil Sibal presented the Lifetime Achievement Award of Geospatial World Forum to the former chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), K Kasturirangan.

  • 56 Idea Film Fare Awards Function held at Mumbai. 'Sharukh Khan' won the best actor award for "My Name is Khan", 'Kajol' won the best actress for "My Name is Khan", best film for "Dabangg", 'Karan Johar' won the best Director for "My Name is Khan". 
  • The living legend and doyen of Indian Statistics, 91years old Padmavibhushan "Prof C.S. Rao" is designated fro Guy Medal in Gold of the Royal Statistical Society, UK. IN the 115 years history of Royal Statistical Society he is 34th receipient of the award. He is the first Asian, first non European and first non American to receive the award 
  • Eminent Malaya, Kaula Lumpur University Vice- Chancelor Acharya Gowth Jasmok has been selected for the prestigious Dr.Y. Nayudamma Memorial Award for the year 2011, for his contribution to science and technology, according to A.Jagadeesh, Director of Dr Y Nayudamma center for Devolopment Alternatives. 
  • Indian President Pratibha Patil presented the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award 2011 to Sri Lankan industrialist Mano Selvanathan at the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas in New Delhi. Mano Selvanathan is one of Sri Lanka's leading industrialists. 
  • Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd, Hyderabad, bagged the First prize in the 'Best Suggestor Award' category at the 21st Inssan National Convention held in Pune . 
  • Agricultural scientist K.V.Raman has been awarded as a prestigious Bharat Jyoti. 
  • Actor Salman Khan's blockbuster entertainer 'Dabangg' made its presence felt at theChevrolet Apsara Awards by bagging eight awards in different categories. 
  • The National Institute of Rural Development (NIRD) has bagged the special recognition award for innovative products, like cost-effective housing, at the recent 98thIndian Science Congress in Chennai. 
  • Tarun Tejpal, Editor of Tehelka, received the "Award for Excellence in Journalism for 2010" from Union Law Minister M. Veerappa Moily in New Delhi.

  • The Institute of Economic Studies, New Delhi, one of the country's premier research institutes, has announced the "Udyog Rattan Award" to Vishal Manchala, Founder Director & CEO of Vast Technologies Private Limited. Also the company has been awarded the "Excellence Award" for the year 2010. His Excellency Mr. Korn Dabbransi, former Prime Minister of Thailand presented the award at the seminar on "Indo-Thai Economic cooperation" in Bangkok, Thailand. 
  • Film Director Bapu, Poet Mullapudi Venkata Ramana, both were selected "NTR Lalitha Kala Award" for 2010-11 Year. NTR Vignan Trust will give this award. 
  • TV actress Swetha Tiwari won the reality show 'Bigboss-4' at Lonavana. Swetha received winner's trophy and 1 crore rupees. She became the first women to win the title of the Big Boss. The others are: Kali 2nd place, Ashmit Patel 3rd place in Big Boss-4. 
  • G.V.Vishwanath won the 'Spellbrain India spelling championship award' in Hyderabad. He is a tenth standard student of Gitanjali Public School. He has spelled 21 words correctly in two-and-half minutes. 
  • Darla Nageswara Rao working in A.P.Govt. Central Press, Chanchalguda, Hyderabad, invented a new concept of Replica art of newspapers. He entered Global World Records. He has entered the Limca Book of World Records in 2006,2008,2009,2010. He replicated newspapers of five Indian languages with the same dimensions and two years later, he repeated the feat in 13 languages, including Arabic and Assamese. 
  • The London-bassed Indian writer, Ms Kishwar Desai has won UK's prestigious Costa First Novel Award 2010 for her book "Witness by Night" which addresses issues like unwanted girl child, gender prejudices and bias and men-woman equality. 
  • SAIL Chairman C.S.Verma received "ICWAI's Icon of the year award" as part of 52nd National Convention of ICWAI in Chennai.
  • Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has awarded the prestigious Pushkin Gold Medal to Professor Arun Mohanty of the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in Moscow for his contribution to studies on Russia and promotion of bilateral cultural ties and friendship. The Pushkin Gold Medal is the highest honorary award given in recognition of outstanding contributions to the promotion of the Russian language and culture. More than 10 Indian scholars and public figures have been awarded the medal since its institution in 1977. 
  • Industrialist Sitaram Jindal announced the institution of Five Annual Prizes of Rs.1 crore each on behalf of the Sitaram Jindal Foundation, the aluminium magnate said these would be given away to people working in the categories of rural development and poverty alleviation, health including drugless therapy, education with an emphasis on moral fortification, science, technology and environment, and peace, social harmony and development.
  • Union minister of urban poverty alleviation and culture Kumari Sileja was selected forthe Eashwari Bai Memorial Award at Hyderabad. 
  • Dravidian University, Vice-Chancellor Cuddapah Ramanaiah received the prestigious‘Amity Academic Excellence Award' at the International Business Horizon (INBUSH) conference held at the Amity Global Business School campus at Noida recently. 
  • Dr. K. Anji Reddy, Chairman, Dr Reddys Labs, was awarded with the Genome Valley Excellence award at the eighth edition of Bio-Asia, a Global Bio-Business forum, in Hyderabad on 22 February.

  • Emani Krishna Rao', Doordarshan News Correspondent at Hyderabad has bagged the prestigious Swiss TV award for his entry 'Let's play safe'dealing with stigma and discrimination attached to children living with HIV. The award was presented to him at Basel,Switzerland. This is the sixth major international award for Mr.Rao.
  • Carnatic vocalist Nisha P. Rajagopal has been chosen as the first recipient of ‘ The Hindu Saregama M.S. Subbulakshmi Award.’ Presented by RmKV, the award, which was instituted on September 16, 2010, seeks to honour and recognise the merit of a young Carnatic vocalist aged between 25 and 35 pursuing music full-time. 
  • The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters has chosen one of the living legends of mathematics, John Willard Milnor of the Institute for Mathematical Sciences in the University of Stony Brook, U.S.A, for the award of its prestigious Abel Prize for the year 2011. Professor Milnor will receive the Prize from His Majesty King Harald at an award ceremony in Oslo on May 24, 2011. 
  • The 2010 Chameli Devi Jain award for “Outstanding Woman Media Person” was presented to a former Tehelka correspondent from Thiruvananthapuram, Shahina K.K, at a function held in New Delhi for her “demonstrated ability to focus on issues that have deep social consequences impacting lives and concerns of ordinary people. Ms. Shahina, who has 13 years of experience in print and television media and is presently writing for Open magazine. 
  • Indian army chief general V.K.Singh becomes the first Indian officer to be inducted in to the ‘Hall of Fame’ of U.S.Army War College. This distinction is extended by the US army to all officers from friendly foreign countries, which rise to the post of ‘chief’ of their respective armies, after attending the coveted cource at US army War College. 
  • Medical Cadet Shikha Awasthi will become the first woman doctor to receive theSword of Honour for overall excellence at the passing out parade of the 45th course of the Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC), Pune on March 18 
  • The prestigious UNESCO Asia Pacific Merit award for cultural heritage conservation was presented to Chowmahalla Palace in Hyderabad on March 15. He bagged the coveted award after edging out heritage sites in 43 countries. UNESCO appreciated the restoration of the palace and efforts to rescue ‘an extraordinary complex from years of abandonment. 
  • Director of Hindi film Peepli Live, Anusha Rizvi has been selected for the 14th Gollapudi Srinivas memorial national award for debut director category. 
  • Mauritius has conferred one of its highest honours, Grand Commander of the Order of the Star and the Key of the Indian Ocean (GCSK), on Maldivian President Mohamed Nasheed. President of Mauritius Anerood Jugnauth presented the award to Mr. Nasheed.
  • Kuldip Nayar, noted journalist was conferred with Honorary Doctorate by Acharya Nagarjuna University at the 31st convocation held in Nagarjuna Nagar, Guntur, A.P. 
  • Mahasweta Devi, celebrated Bengali writer and activist was conferred the Yashwantrao Chavan National Award 2010 in Mumbai for her contribution to national integration, democratic values and the socio-economic development of India.
  • On the occasion of International Women’s Day The Minister of State (Independent Charge) of Women and Child Development Smt. Krishna Tirath presented the ‘Stree Shakti Puraskar’ 2010, given every year to eminent women for their dedication to the cause of women and the struggles in their own lives to bring about a more gender equitable society.

  • Rani Lakshmibai Award has been presented to Mrs. Pottabathini Padmavathi from Andhra Pradesh, who did not allow her disability to become and adversity and faced the challenge positively to learn music and become an established artist.
  • Kannagi Award was bestowed upon Mrs Thagu Maya Bardewa from Sikkim, who has done great work helping people in distress, orphans, widows and destitute.
  • Rani Gaidinliu Zeliang Award to Mrs. Rathnamma from Karnataka, for her extensive work for awareness generation on child labour and eradication of dowry, early marriage, untouchability and sexual harassment.
  • Devi Ahilyabai Holkar Award was awarded to Mrs. Monika S. Garg an officer of the 1989 batch of Indian Administrative service from Uttar Pradesh for her outstanding work for empowerment of women through promoting their participation in Government Programmes.
  • The Mata Jijabai and Rani Rudrama Devi awards were not given to anyone this year.
  • Indian Oil Corporation has bagged the best performance award at the 21 st national meet of forum of women in public sector. This award is meant to further add value to their contribution and empowerment and in turn reach out to the masses of less privileged women in bringing about awareness. Indian Oil has taken many initiatives to empower women at all levels in the hierarchy.

  • Celebrated play back singer Asha Bhonsle was conferred on the Honorary D.Litt. (Doctor of Letters) degree from the Yashwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University (YCMOU) in Nasik.

  • Former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev has been given Russia's highest award, the Order of St Andrew, to mark his 80th birthday for his "enormous work as head of state".

  • Aboubakr Jamai of Morocco, the co-founder and former managing director of the weekly newspaper Le Journal Hebdomadaire was presented the 2010 Gebran Tueni Award in Beirut, Lebanon. The award was conferred upon him in recognition of constant struggle in publishing some of the region's finest independent journalism while dealing with a monarchy that prefers to maintain control of the Moroccan media. The Gebran Tueni Award is the annual prize of the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers (WAN-IFRA) that honours an editor or publisher from the Arab region. 
  • The New Delhi Railway Station received the National Tourism Award for the Best Tourist-Friendly Railway Station in India. The award was given for the station’s development in the areas of passenger amenities and efficiency of operations. New Delhi station launched battery-operated vehicles to ferry senior citizens and the disabled. 
  • Creative Abby awards recognising the best of advertisements were given out during the Goafest 2011, Varca village in Goa. Ogilvy and Mather won the only Grand Prix and five gold metals. The Piyush Pandey-led agency's work on Cadbury Dairy Milk won the only Grand Prix awarded this year, in the integrated category. Mudra Communications bagged the maximum 37 medals. The Times of India's Aman ki Asha campaign won three awards at the Creative Abby awards-the finale of Goafest 2011. 
  • Indian novelist Vikas Kumar Jha has been chosen for the 2011 International Indu Sharma Katha Samman, for his novel ‘McCluskieganj ‘.
    Noted Hindi poet Vishwannnth Prasad Tiwari was selected for the 20th Vyas Sammanfor his poetry collection, Phir Bhi Kuch Rah Jayega. 
  • President Pratibha Patil on18 April decorated personnel of the armed services with awards that included the Kirti Chakra and the Shaurya Chakra, during the Defence Investiture Ceremony at the Rashtrapati Bhavan. Indu Sharma, mother of Captain Deepak Sharma of the Corps of Signals, who lost his life fighting militants in Jammu and Kashmir in March last year, received the Kirti chakra. Major Rahul Gurung (Corps of Engineers/Assam Rifles) and Captain Vikrant Ajit Deshmukh (Madras) were also awarded the Kirti Chakra for fighting insurgents and terrorists in Manipur and Jammu and Kashmir respectively.
    The five personnel who were posthumously awarded the Shaurya Chakra included Major Deepak Yadav and Major Nitish Roy, who were killed during the terrorist attack on the Indian mission in Kabul in February last. Guardsman Krishan Kumar (Brigade of Guards), Sepoy Ravi Kant (Dogra), and Sepoy Sangat Singh (Mahar/Rashtriya Rifles) were also awarded the Shaurya Chakra posthumously. 
  • Pulitzer awards were announced for the year 2011. Pulitzers were awarded in 13 journalism categories and seven arts categories. The prize for fiction went to Jennifer Egan for A Visit From the Goon Squad. Bruce Norris won the award for drama for his play Clybourne Park. The history prize went to Eric Foner for The Fiery Trial: Abraham Lincoln and American Slavery. Ron Chernow won in the biography category for Washington: A Life. Madame White Snake, by Zhou Long, won for music. Kay Ryan took the prize for poetry for The Best of It: New and Selected Poems. 
  • The award for general non-fiction was awarded to Siddhartha Mukherjee for The Emperor of All Maladies: A Biography of Cancer. Carol Guzy, a photographer from The Washington Post, became the first journalist to win four Pulitzer Prizes. 
  • Rights activist Binayak Sen, who was freed on bail by the Supreme Court in a case of sedition, has been chosen for the South Korean Gwangju Award for human rights for 2011. 
  • The managing director of Cheminnova group of companies, M. Vasudev Rao, has been presented the prestigious “Pride of India Leadership Award” for his outstanding contribution to the Pharma Industry in India. The award was presented by President of Mauritius Anerood Jugnauth to Mr. Rao at a function organised in Mauritius by the NRI Institute and hosted by Government of Mauritius recently. 
  • VA Tech Wabag Limited, a leading global player in water and wastewater management has received the prestigious GWI Global Water Award in Berlin. 
  • Indian mathematician and theoretical computer scientist Ravi Kannan was awarded the 2011 Knuth Prize. For research in computer science it is a prestigious international recognition. Professor Kannan is a leader in algorithms research group at Microsoft Research Labs in India. He is the first Indian to receive the Knuth Prize. The Association for Computing Machinery's (ACM) Special Interest Group on Algorithms and Computation Theory (SIGACT) awarded the prize to Professor Kannan. 
  • Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) bagged the prestigious Srishti Good Green Governance Award for 2010. Srishti Good Green Governance Award was given to RSP in recognition of its eco-friendly efforts to reduce pollutants and green house gas emissions. It was also rewarded for its measures of waste utilisation and water conversation as well for its initiatives to expand corporate social responsibility. 
  • State-owned gas utility GAIL India Ltd on 21 April 2011 was honoured with the Outstanding PSU of the Year award by All India Management Association (AIMA). The award was received by GAIL Chairman and Managing Director B C Tripathi from Home Minister P Chidambaram. The award was conferred upon GAIL in recognition of its outstanding performance and its contribution towards the growth of the nation, development of innovation & technology and building an equitable society. The company had been earlier ranked the number one gas utility in Asia and number two gas utility in the world by Platts which is an eminent petroleum research and publishing house. 
  • Social activist Anna Hazare was on 7 April 2011 announced the winner of the 2011Rabindranath Tagore Peace Prize by the Indian Institute of Planning and Management (IIPM). IIPM entrepreneurship and National Economic Planning declared the award for Hazare to show solidarity to the modern Gandhi’s determined and non-violent protest against corruption and the institution of a Jan Lokpal Bill. The award carries a cash reward of one crore rupees, a gold medal and a citation. The award is meant to honour people who selflessly work throughout his lifetime for the betterment of the society, working for the poor, the needy and the general public. The 2010 Rabindranath Tagore Peace Prize was won by social activist Irom Sharmila Chanu, the Iron Lady of Manipur. 
  • Kannada writer S. L. Bhyrappa was selected for the 20th Saraswati Samman for his novel Mandra on 5 April 201. Mandra depicts the world of North Indian classical music and its locale is Bombay, Delhi, Gwalior, Banaras, Malva and California. 
  • British astrophysicist Martin Rees, whose research delves deep into the mysteries of the cosmos, has won the 2011 Templeton Prize for career achievements affirming life's spiritual dimension. Announcing the award, the United States-based Templeton Foundation said Rees's insights into the mysteries of the Big Bang and so-called black holes in space have "provoked vital questions that address mankind's deepest hopes and fears. 
  • Pillitla prakash, a folk artist from Andhra Pradesh has elected for central government’s“Bharath Vikas Ratna”award. Both information and broadcasting ministry and visveswarayya foundation have jointly constituted this award.

  • Professor Subhasis Chaudhuri of Indian Institute of Technology-Mumbai was selected for the prestigious G. D. Birla Award for Scientific Research. Prof. Chaudhuri who works in the Department of Electrical Engineering was chosen for the award for his important contributions in the area of electronic communications. The award, constituted by the K. K. Birla Foundation, carries a cash prize of Rs.1.50 lakh and is given to scientists below the age of 50. 
  • British-born Sierra Leonean novelist Aminatta Forna won the 2011 Commonwealth Writers' Prize for her novel, The Memory of Love. 
  • The Information and Broadcasting Ministry announced the list of awardees for the 58th National Film Awards on 19 May 2011. Feature Films jury was headed by J.P. Dutta, Non-Feature Films jury was headed by A.K. Bir and Best Writing on Cinema jury was headed by Ashok Vajpeyi. The jury decided on the awardees to honour the best work of Indian Cinema for the year 2010.

  • Philip Roth was announced as the winner of the fourth Man Booker International Prize at a press conference at the Sydney Opera House on 18 May 2011. Roth was chosen from a list of 13 eminent contenders. American novelist Philip Roth is a literary giant and one of the worlds most prolific, celebrated - and controversial - writers. Born in March 1933 in New Jersey, Roth is best known for his 1969 novel Portnoy's Complaint, and for his late-1990s trilogy comprising the Pulitzer Prize-winning American Pastoral (1997), I Married a Communist (1998), and The Human Stain (2000). 
  • WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange was awarded the Sydney Peace Foundation's top honour for exceptional courage in pursuit of human rights. Though the Peace Prize is awarded annually by the foundation, only three other people in its 14-year history have been awarded the gold award for courage in pursuit of human rights — the Dalai Lama, Nelson Mandela and Japanese Buddhist leader Daisaku Ikeda. 
  • Super 30 founder Anand Kumar, whose initiative helped several students from underprivileged families make it to the IIT-JEE was chosen for the Education in Excellence Award-2011 to be awarded on Doha on 13 May 2011. 
  • German Chancellor Angela Merkel was chosen for the prestigious Jawaharlal Nehru Award for International Understanding for 2009 for her enormous efforts toward sustainable and equitable development. The German leader, Merkel is known for her efforts for good governance and understanding and for the creation of a world better positioned to handle the emerging challenges of the 21st century. 

  • On 14 June 2011, Rajasthan Chief Minister, Ashok Gehlot presentedthe Anuvrat Ahimsa international peace award to noted Gandhian philosophy exponent Thomas Clough Daffern. The award consisted of a memento, a cheque for Rs.1 lakh and a certificate of merit.Dr. Daffern is a Director of London-based International Institute of Peace Studies and Global Philosophy. The institute works across several academic fields for study and application of peace and philosophy to various spheres of life. 
  • Two Indian companies Abellon Clean Energy Ltd. and Husk Power Systems have been awarded this year’s Ashden Awards for Sustainable Energy, claimed to be Britain’s most prestigious green energy awards. The awards were launched in 2001 to encourage greater use of local clean energy to address climate change and alleviate poverty. 
  • Irish writer Colum McCann’s Let The Great World Spin, a novel set in the shadow of Philippe Petit’s 1974 tightrope walk between the twin towers of the World Trade Center, has won the 2011 International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award, one of the world’s most lucrative book prizes. The prize is worth €100,000.
